Bed-Stuy Teen Faces Murder Charges For 2018 Sumner Houses Slay

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, BROOKLYN — A Bed-Stuy teen faces murder charges after he fought with a cab driver and spit at police who tried to stop him, according to police and reports.

Lamique Haynie, 19, stands accused of shooting 29-year-old Theodore Smith in the head inside Smith's Sumner Houses home on Park Avenue and Broadway on Nov. 12, 2018, police said.

Smith was shot at about 7:30 p.m. and died later that evening in Woodhull Hospital, said police.

Police arrested Haynie at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday morning when a cab driver accused him of trying to steal his things, a police source told the Daily News.

When the teen was booked into a local precinct, police realized Haynie was wanted for murder, according to the Daily News report.

Haynie, a fellow Sumner Houses resident, was arraigned on murder and criminal possession of a weapon charges in Brooklyn Criminal Court Saturday and held without bail, court records show.

The Bed-Stuy teen also faces 13 charges linked to the Thursday arrest, including assault to an officer and resisting arrest court records show.

Michael Patrick Rooney of the Legal Aid Society, who represented Haynie in court, declined to comment on the case.
