'Black Laughs Matter' Comedy Show Coming to Bed-Stuy BLM Mural

BED-STUY, BROOKLYN — A night of laughter and Caribbean-themed celebrations in honor of Labor Day are the latest events planned for Brooklyn's Black Lives Matter mural, organizers announced this week.

The Bed-Stuy Mural Collective, which hosts activities at the Fulton Street mural each week, will bring a socially-distanced "Yard Party" and "Black Laughs Matter" comedy show to the block on Saturday.

Starting at 5 p.m., Brooklynites can join in on Caribbean Celebrations at the mural, complete with a steel band music performance and a live DJ. The evening will also feature wellness activities including flag waving Soca-Aerobics and Skate Aerobics.

The Caribbean-themed party comes as New Yorkers get ready to celebrate Carnival this weekend. Both the West Indian Day Parade and the J'Ouvert Festival are scheduled for Labor Day Weekend, though with new formats given the coronavirus crisis.

After the Yard Party, the comedy show will begin.

The night of comedy will be hosted by local comic Dave Lester and comedian Dara Jemmott. It is presented by the Mural Collective, Bed Stuy Gateway BID and Nicholas Brooklyn.

The line-up includes Gmama Lee, Ashley Morris, Mark Gregory, Janelle James and Freddie Ricks.

"These top rating local standups are coming together in humor to uplift and heal the community with the gift of laughter," a spokesperson for the Collective told Patch.

The events are the latest activities hosted at the mural, which has become a hub for community events and activism since it was painted in June.

Most recently, a "Black Love Matters" wedding was held at the mural.
