To Mom with All My Love

A tribute to mothers everywhere.

When I was asked to write a blog for Bed-Stuy Patch, I thought, great, a place for my daily rant.  Yes, I usually have a daily rant, brought on by something I read in the newspaper, saw on the news, or some action by a person on the street or subway.  My mom has been the sounding board for my rants but, now I could have a wider audience and open up the discussion to include others.  Whoopee!!!

As usual, I read something in the paper this morning that provoked a rant.  However, instead of writing about it, I am going to write about my mom, the person who always brings greater clarity and understanding to the situation at hand, and without whom I would not have this opportunity.  I think this is especially appropriate as Mother’s Day is this coming Sunday.

My mom is my best friend.  She gave me life and sustains my life on a daily basis.   I speak with my mom almost daily, sometimes several times a day.  She is always there to provide love, comfort, strength and wise counsel.  Our talks cover a wide range of subjects: family issues, current events, politics, men and our shared passion; gardening.  Sometimes we call just to check in or share a funny story or joke we heard.

Many of the choices I have made in life were based on how they would affect my mother.  Once, when I was a teenager,  we sat together and watched  one of those tabloid specials on TV.  I remember the promo “This is a show every parent should watch with their teenager”.  The show centered on all the difficult choices teenagers had to make about drugs, sex, and peer pressure.   Some of the parents on the show talked about the problems they had with their kids while others expressed concern that their kids might make the wrong choices.   The show also featured experts who gave advice on how to deal with or prevent these problems.

At the end of the program my mother turned to me and said “I trust you.  I have taught you right from wrong, and I know you will make the right decisions.”  Since that day, I have endeavored not to break that trust.  I have failed on a few occasions, thankfully nothing major, or life altering.  I was always forgiven; given love, along with a stern lecture and words of guidance and encouragement.   So, here I am, almost 50 years old, still guided by those words.  And when I am lost and cannot find my way I know I can still call mom for advice, understanding, love and comfort.

I invite you to take a moment to share a story about your mom or just wish her a happy Mother’s Day and tell her you love her.
