The shooter pulled out his gun when a neighbor told him to stop fighting with a woman on the street.

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, BROOKLYN — A man who had been assaulting a woman on a Bed-Stuy street shot an innocent bystander when neighbors tried to stop the abuse, according to police and reports.

The shooter was fighting with the woman on Tompkins Avenue near Stockton Street around 7:50 p.m. when bystanders heard him threaten to shoot the woman in the head, according to police and the New York Daily News.

A bullet hit Franklin Cedano, 58, who had been helping his family move a refrigerator nearby, and threw him to the ground, his niece, Leidi Cedano, told the Daily News.

“He shot my uncle in the chest,” said Cedano, adding that her uncle’s first thoughts were of his niece’s one-year-old baby girl.

“Instead of asking for help, he waved my sister and her baby to get into the building so the baby wouldn't get shot.”

The shooter fled the scene and Cedano was rushed to Kings County Hospital where he was listed in critical condition Thursday morning, police said.

Police released photos of the shooter, who can be seen pointing his gun into the street, Thursday afternoon.
