Participants Needed for Black Maternal Health Research Study

Black women in New York are being invited to participate in a doctoral research study examining their lived experiences with pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum care, and the maternal healthcare system.

I am Maliyka A. Muhammad, MPH, MA, a doctoral candidate conducting dissertation research titled “From Evidence to Experience: Centering Black Women’s Lived Realities in Maternal Health.”

The study seeks to center Black women’s own experiences and perspectives in conversations about maternal health and to better understand how those lived experiences can inform efforts to improve maternal healthcare and outcomes.

Who Can Participate?

Participants must:

• Identify as Black/African American
• Be between 18 and 50 years old
• Have given birth within the past 10 years
• Currently reside in New York or Georgia

Community members are also encouraged to share the study with Black women in their networks who may be eligible to participate.

Although this announcement is being shared with the New York community, eligible participants may reside anywhere in New York State or Georgia.

Black women’s lived experiences are essential to understanding maternal health beyond statistics and clinical outcomes. By sharing their experiences, participants can contribute to research aimed at better understanding what Black women experience within maternal healthcare and what they identify as areas in need of change.

Participation is voluntary, and the study has undergone institutional research review.
