Stefani Zinerman, a community advocate, plans to formally announce her candidacy at a Thursday event. She received an endorsement from Vanguard Independent Democratic Association, an influential Bed-Stuy political club.
Cohen said he's running from outside the local party establishment.
"While I think I’m very rooted in the community, I'm not running from inside the apparatus of the party so to speak," he said.
Cohen's website touted his roles founding Politicize My Death, an anti-gun violence initiative and Racial Justice BK, an organization dedicated to dismantling systemic racism.
The primary is June 23.
