How Popular Culture Shapes Representations of Black Women in the Media and Literature Panel Discussion and Book Signing

On Saturday, March 24, 2012, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., “Her Word as Witness: Women Writers of the African Diaspora” exhibit curator Laylah Amatullah Barrayn, the Eleventh National Black Writers Conference, and BSRC/CAC/Skylight Gallery at Restoration Plaza will co-sponsor a panel discussion: “How Popular Culture Shapes Representations of Black Women in the Media and Literature.”

The panel discussion will include an award-winning assemblage of writers, including novelist, poet, and journalist asha bandele; cultural critic, journalist and scholar Joan Morgan; journalist and novelist Jill Nelson; professor of journalism, essayist, and author Pamela Newkirk; and writer, freelance journalist, editor, and essayist Akiba Solomon. It will be moderated by Shani Jamila, artist, writer, and journalist.  The program will be followed by a book signing and light reception.
