Giving Tuesday 2019: How To 'Give Where You Live' In Brooklyn

More than 150 charities will participate in a #BrooklynGives campaign this GivingTuesday, held every year after Thanksgiving.

BROOKLYN, NY — As the rush of Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday's frantic shopping comes to a close, holiday spenders will be asked to use their money for another reason: helping those in need.

The world's largest day of charitable giving, #GivingTuesday, will kick off the morning of Nov. 27, with a local twist for those in Brooklyn.

The retail-response holiday will also mark the culmination of the Brooklyn Community Foundation's #BrooklynGives campaign, a three-week push to bring in at least $1 million for nonprofits in the borough.

The campaign launched on Nov. 12 and will end with a 24-hour celebration on Giving Tuesday.

#BrooklynGives features sponsored matches and prizes from Brooklyn Community Foundation, Santander Bank, and Sugar in the Raw to the 126 charities that are featured on its website.

"This campaign makes it easy to discover and support effective and inspiring organizations right in our own backyards, while participating in the largest single day of giving in the world, Giving Tuesday," Cecilia Clarke, the foundation's CEO and president, said about the #BrooklynGives campaign last year.

So far the campaign has brought in hundreds of thousands of dollars to many of the organizations, including more than $10,000 to Read718, an education nonprofit in Boerum Hill, and exalt, which helps teens who have faced the criminal justice system.

The final #GivingTuesday push will also mean prizes for certain charities that get the most donations within certain time limits.

Santander will give $1,000 to the organization that raises the most between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m., National Grid will give $1,000 to the organization that raises the most between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. and Sugar in the Raw will give $1,000 to the "small-sized" organization that raises the most between 2 and 5 p.m.
