Gunman Charged In Bed-Stuy Murder Cops Ignored: Police & Reports

Jimmie L. Russell has been charged with murdering Robert Fason, whose death is the subject of an internal NYPD investigation, police said.

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, BROOKLYN — A suspect has been charged for the murder of Robert Fason, the man who died on a Bed-Stuy block after two police officers, sent to investigate, failed to get out of their car, according to police and reports.

Jimmie L. Russell, 33, was charged with murder Friday for fatally shooting Fason, 44, and seriously wounding a 43-year-old man outside 1639 Broadway in Bushwick on June 30, police said.

The 43-year-old was rushed to the hospital but Fason, who staggered away with a gunshot wound in his chest, died on Decatur Street, police said.

Fason’s death sparked outrage when the Daily News reported two police officers stand accused of ignoring a 911 call for help.

“They could have saved a life,” a woman who asked to remain anonymous told the Daily News. “They didn’t even get out of the car.”

The Decatur Street resident called 911 at about 4 a.m. when she saw Fason had collapsed near her home, just minutes after he and another man had been shot, the Daily News reported.

Two officers arrived 35 minutes later, sat in their car for three minutes, then drove away, she said.

The woman called 911 again and at about 4:45 a.m. police arrived, found Fason, and pronounced him dead at the scene, according to the Daily News.

The two Brooklyn cops — whom the New York Post identified as 73rd Precinct Officers Roberto Anton and Lisa Lovell — were suspended days after the shooting and are now the subject of an internal investigation.

Russell was charged Friday with murder, attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon, said police.
