NYC City Council Election District 41: Candidates, Polling Places And More

Everything you need to know to vote in Tuesday's primary election in Bed-Stuy, Brownsville and Crown Heights.

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, BROOKLYN — Voters in Bed-Stuy, Brownsville and Crown Heights will head toward the polls on Tuesday, Sept. 12 to cast their votes in this year's Democratic primary.

Mayor Bill de Blasio and public advocate Letitia James will be on the ballot, as well as several candidates vying to become the next Brooklyn District Attorney. In Bed-Stuy, a slew of Democratic candidates are fighting to represent District 41 in City Council now that the current city councilwoman, Darlene Mealy, has reached the end of her term limit.

District 41 City Council Candidates

Alicka Ampry-Samuel: Ampry-Samuel has served as Chief of Staff for State Assemblywoman Latrice Walker, as a Senior Advisor within the New York City Housing Authority, and as a community organizer in Brownsville.

Royston Antoine: Antoine is a small business owner who has been running “Uncle Roy’s” clothing store in Brooklyn for the past 25 years. Antoine was one of several candidates to vie for the 55th Assembly District seat left vacant when William Boyland was convicted on bribery, extortion and theft charges in 2014. Antoine lost the Democratic primary to Latrice Walker.

Henry L. Butler: Butler is currently the district manager of Brooklyn's Community Board 3 in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Butler also serves as president of the Vanguard Independent Democratic Club, and is the former Chairman of the labor committee for the Brooklyn branch of the NAACP.

Leopold Cox: Cox is a law student at New York Law School with 25 years experience as a municipal worker and a Transit Worker Union member.

Victor Jordan: Jordan is a former mathematics teacher at the Boys and Girls High School and a former labor law professor at Empire State College, SUNY. He has served as chair of the Education Committee for Community Board 17 and founded the local Community Emergency Response Team.

Moreen A. King: King is the CEO of two Brooklyn educational centers, co-chairs the Bushwick Community Partnership Program and the Private Child Care Owners Coalition, and has served as a member of Community Board 17.

David Miller: Miller was also a Democratic candidate for District 55 of the New York State Assembly in 2012 and 2014.

Deidre Olivera: Olivera is a community activist and current editor-in-chief for the Brownsville Collective Community Newspaper, with a background working as a skilled laborer.

Cory Provost: Provost the current leader of Brooklyn’s 58th State Assembly District. Provost has also worked with New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer’s administration and organized volunteers for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.

Where to Vote

There are polling places across the district; your specific one depends on where you live. To find your polling place, click here and enter your address. You need to be registered as a Democrat at that address to vote in the primary.

When Can I Vote?

The elections take place on Tuesday, September 12. Polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 9 p.m.
