Bed Stuy Gunman Gets 16 Years For Shooting Cop: DA
The Bed Stuy man confessed to shooting at four NYPD officers in 2018 after a short police chase.

BED STUY, NY — A Bed Stuy man who injured an NYPD detective after a police chase and shootout will spend 16 years behind bars, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced Wednesday.
Kelvin Stichel, 37, pleaded guilty in January to second-degree attempted murder, according to Gonzalez. He shot Detective Miguel Soto in the leg and shot six times at four officers in July, 2018, prosecutors said.
After his 16 years in prison, Stichel will have five years of post-release supervision, according to Gonzalez.

"The six shots this defendant fired at officers as he fled could have killed them," Gonzalez said in a news release. "We will never tolerate violence against law enforcement in Brooklyn."
In 2019, four NYPD officers spotted Stichel walking in Bed Stuy and followed him, thinking he matched up with a suspect in a previous armed robbery, Gonzalez said. When police caught up and asked Stichel to show his hands, Stichel shot at the officers six times, hitting Soto in the leg, Gonzalez said. An officer shot Stichel in the left arm while shooting back, Gonzalez said.
