The Best Beef Patties in Bed-Stuy

Where to find the best Jamaican Patties in the neighborhood (and, perhaps, the entire United States)

We are lucky enough to live in a city and neighborhood where home-made beef patties are abundant, something you can’t really find anywhere else in the United States.

In fact, New York City is the only city where finding a freshly made beef patty is not a rarity. In many parts of the country, people don't even know what a beef patty is.

This week, I decided to honor some of the restaurants that feature beef patties in the area, because as much as I love Tower Isles beef patties, these are far superior.

I am happy to say that I also tried Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery, the one chain restaurant I know of that specializes in beef patties. And I still think the ones listed below are better.

The spicy filling of this beef patty is cooled down by the thick, harder crust. I prefer a little more filling and less crust, but if you are trying to fill up, this is the right choice for you.

4. West Indian Caterers

321 Nostrand Avenue

I love the thick, soft and crumbly crust of this beef patty, which has a slightly sweet flavor. The filling is smooth and has a distinct savory taste that compliments the sweetness of the crust.

3. Rowe’s Restaurant

310 Tompkins
This beef patty has a firm crust that is thick and bready, with a warm, salty and spicy filling that oozes out of the patty when you bite in. The filling is the best part. So luckily, there is plenty of it.

2. Jamaican Way

1557 Fulton Street

This beef patty is huge, which makes up for its thin crust which is crispy and delicious but not nearly as filling as the thicker crusts. The filling is soft and spicy.

1. Tastee Pattee

1371 Fulton Street

What I love about this beef patty is the particularly thin, flaky, buttery crust, almost like a delicate pastry, but with beef instead of blueberry filling. The filling is extremely mild and only slightly spicy, so you can still taste the flavor of the crust.

Best to eat these patties with some coco bread; there isn’t a better combination in this hemisphere. Hats off to Jamaican food!

One more note: I put these patties in the order of my favorites. But the key is to find the crust and filling combo you like best. I am partial to the thin crust, but can see the appeal in a thicker, breadier crust. Some like a mildly seasoned filling, others prefer a filling that leaves your lips burning. Find your preference, and go from there.
