Wife Of Bed-Stuy Cyclist In Coma Launches GoFundMe Campaign

Ester Diaz is trying to raise $50,000 after her husband Diego Tapia was beaten by into a coma by a suspect who has not been caught.

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, BROOKLYN — The wife of the cyclist who is in a coma after he was punched to the ground while riding his bike in Bed-Stuy has started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for his medical bills.

Domingo Tapia, 38, was riding his bike down Fulton Street near Albany Avenue around 1:30 a.m. on June 8 when he was punched in the head, said police and his wife, Ester Diaz.

“My husband is a victim of violent crime, Diaz wrote on the campaign website. “He is fighting for his life.”

Tapia was riding home from his job at a grocery store when he was knocked off his bike by an unidentified man and fractured his skull, DNAinfo reported.

Tapia, the father of two sons aged five and seven, has been in a medically-induced coma ever since, said police and Diaz.

“He was a good father and provider,” wrote Diaz, whose GoFundMe campaign had raised $2,815 by Wednesday morning. “Any assistance and prayers are welcome.”

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams attended a vigil for Tapia Tuesday night at the site of the accident and pledged to personally reward anyone with information about the attacker.

Police have released photos of the suspect, who appears to be a man in his twenties seen wearing a Nike baseball cap and a long-sleeved shirt with a letter "G" on the chest.
