Is Age 65 Considered 'Middle-Aged'?: Marist Poll

The Institute's director reaches a milestone and wants to know what Americans think.

The people at the Marist Institute for Public Opinion took some time off recently from asking people whether they support Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders or Donald Trump.

They decided to see what the public thinks about an issue important to the Institute’s director, Dr. Lee M. Miringoff.

As he turns 65, Miringoff pondered the following question: Do you think someone who is 65 is young, middle-aged or old?

The Marist Poll surveyed 1,297 adults 18 years of age or older and found that 55 percent of Americans think that 65 is middle-aged.

About a third—or 34 percent—consider 65 to be old, while one in 10—or 11 percent—think 65 is young.

Pollsters said similar proportions of Americans last year thought 64 to be old.
