Friends of John&nbsp;Jay Homestead wrap up their 2026 Scholars series withJames Traub,&nbsp;The Cradle of Citizenship: How Schools Can Help Save Our Democracy
The Founders wanted schools to teach students to understand our political system and to engage in reasoned political debate as adults; the Schoolhouse at John Jay Homestead was built for Jay children and also for the children of tenant farmers and farm hands.&nbsp; Historian, journalist and former Friends of John Jay Homestead speaker on his renowned&nbsp;John Quincy Adams: Militant Spirit,&nbsp;Traub spent a year exploring how schools now teach students–or fail to teach them–the essentials of American history and government, as well as how to use that knowledge in respectful, informed debate.&nbsp; Note: the talk will be preceded by a short business section of our Annual Meeting.
This lecture will be held at Bedford Playhouse (633 Old Post Rd, Bedford, NY) due to ongoing construction at John Jay Homestead.

Lewisboro Library

If your family prepared for an emergency? This comprehensive one-hour program, led by members of the National Guard, will go over the steps you need to prepare for emergencies and disasters.
The Preparedness Training Program teaches residents to have the tools and resources to prepare for any type of disaster, respond accordingly and recover as quickly as possible. Participants will be advised on how to properly prepare for any natural or man-made disaster, including developing a family emergency plan and stocking up on emergency supplies.
Each family that attends will receive one Preparedness Kit (provided at least 45 people register).

<a href="https://westchesterlandtrust.org/preserves/tom-burke-preserve/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Tom Burke Preserve</a> in Bedford is home to a variety of native flowers, shrubs, trees, and grasses, acting as a haven for vital pollinators. Learn how the <a href="https://www.fatandsassygoatsny.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Fat and Sassy Goats</a> are helping us keep invasive plants at bay to support biodiversity and the sensitive habitat that so many pollinators rely on. A win-win for these hungry goats and our stewardship team who comes in to restore native plants afterward.
Join <a href="https://westchesterlandtrust.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Westchester Land Trust</a> staff for a walk at the preserve to learn more about this unique method of biocontrol and watch these furry weed warriors do their thing!

Please park along the shoulder of McLain Street on the same side as the preserve. Carpooling is encouraged. There are no restrooms on site. Please budget extra time in case you need to stop on the way. Accessibility: We’ll cover less than 0.5 miles round trip on relatively level terrain with a typical slope of 2 percent. Trails are mowed grass and may include some occasional rodent tunnels or muddy conditions after rainfall.
Safety: Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Please bring a water bottle and wear sun protection, long pants, and closed-toed shoes. Pants tucked into your socks are recommended to avoid ticks and poison ivy.

Fat and Sassy Goats: Clearing the Way for Pollinators

This monthly, one hour gathering is for those who are caring for and supporting a loved one alongside an illness or aging, or perhaps have recently lost someone. This is a time just for you, to be in community and connection with others who understand.
The gathering is led by Grief Coach and Educator, Barri Leiner Grant, Founder of The Memory Circle (<a href="https://www.thememorycircle.com)" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">thememorycircle.com)</a> for grief and loss. Barri supports grievers in her work and spent ten years as a caregiver for her father Neil who lived with Alzheimer’s.
Barri encourages attendees to express their feelings and take notice of the beauty in the world through guided writing prompts. As one attendee wrote: “I was intimidated about getting my thoughts and feelings on paper, especially around caregiving. Barri put me at ease with her warmth and honesty. I left with new ideas for connecting with myself and bringing clarity to the challenges I face as a caregiver. I can’t wait for the next session!”

viewing scope on hand so you can get a closer look.&nbsp;Educational materials in English and Spanish will be

The Gallery at Yellow Studio

Join The Gallery at Yellow Studio for the opening reception of Fiber Forward, a group exhibition featuring 38 women and non-binary artists, on Saturday, May 30, from 4 to 6pm. Curated by Tina Villaveces, Fiber Forward examines fiber art as a site of experimentation and critical inquiry, presenting sculpture, installation, embroidery, weaving, and mixed media that challenge conventional perceptions of the medium. On Tuesday, April 14th, the Bedford Democratic Committee endorsed Beth Davidson from the field of Democratic contenders vying for the NY-17 congressional candidacy to defeat Republican incumbent Mike Lawler in the 2026 election.
A Rockland County Legislator, Beth is Chair of the Environment Committee and Vice Chair of the Housing and Economic Development Committee. She is a former two-term Nyack school board member with a two-decade history of service on both sides of the Hudson. 
At EMILY’s List, Beth helped to elect pro-choice Democratic women across the country – senators, representatives and governors. At the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Davidson raised awareness and funds for those impacted by MS. Closer to home, Beth serves at the Rockland County Pride Center as a volunteer and advocate.
Bedford Democratic District Leader Kevin McAvey spoke for many in the BDC as he endorsed Beth Davidson last night: “Beth Davidson has decades of experience serving her community, and a legacy of fighting for our most vulnerable.She is a skilled listener and tireless coalition-builder. Beth has the temperament and track record to win this election – and deliver for our district.” 
The Democratic primary for NY-17 will be held June 23rd 2026. Early voting begins June 13th.
