The match started off well with both sides displaying some quality rugby.  In the 9th minute Greenwich dotted down for points following a nice backline break.

Harvey responded in the 15th minute after some solid phase play. A Billy Stapleton penalty added three points to Harvey’s tally, but Greenwich responded again and took advantage of some brutal backline tackling to up their lead to eleven points.

With time winding down in the half, the Cavaliers maintained their composure and steadily moved the ball down the pitch. Some nicely executed forward work led to a wide ball to Sharif Koonce who bulled his way into the tryzone. Stapleton converted, but halftime came with Harvey trailing 14 to 10.

The second half was a back and forth period, but Greenwich was able to maintain much more quality possession. Harvey threatened several times but could not puncture the Greenwich defense for points. The Cardinals added two unconverted trys midway through the half to secure their victory.

Rugby

4/15 – NYRFC

Harvey played host Sunday (4/15) to the New York U-18 Rugby Club and battled to keep pace in a game eventually won by the visitors, 36-18. The match started well with Harvey touching down for a try in the second minute of play.

Following a nicely executed kick by Billy Stapleton the Cavaliers forced a turnover deep in New York territory. The ball was quickly worked out to Connor Moore who raced in for the points.

NY responded in the seventh minute with a converted try to take the lead. They benefited from some arm tackles for this score. The match held even until the 21st minute when NY countered a poorly executed kick and raced in for their second score.

In the 33rd minute, Harvey was awarded a penalty 23 meters out and Stapleton nailed the conversion. With the lead cut to six points, Harvey conceded another try in stoppage time – the third time this season. At half-time, NY enjoyed a 13 point lead.

Harvey responded well at the start of the second half. In the 38th minute Stapleton added three more points on a penalty, and in the 48th minute Sharif Koonce was finally rewarded for his solid play. This converted try left the score NY 21, Harvey 18.

Harvey had several opportunities to tie or take the lead for the next ten minutes but the Cavaliers saw their efforts fall short. With nine minutes to play the NY players regained their composure while Harvey lost the momentum. NY scored two tries and one penalty in the final nine minutes to put the match out of reach.

The JV rugby team played well in the second match of the day. Led by flanker Mike Meehan, the forward handled themselves well. Prop Will Leon had his best match to date. The backs moved the ball well, and Jack Chirico did well in his first match at scrumhalf. The boys fell six scores to one, but their effort throughout was solid.
