Katonah – Three members of the Harvey rugby team have been selected to play in all-star competition this weekend in Massachusetts. Zack Buckwald, Sharif Koonce, and Andre Britton-Tannebaum were chosen along with 21 other rugby players from the NY/CT/NJ region to form a team of high school all-stars who will compete against top high school players from New England.

Buckwald, Koonce, and Britton-Tannebaum had been nominated to participate in a five week tri-state high school training camp involving over 60 athletes.  Following the training camp, coaches trimmed the roster to 24 members to compete in the all-star weekend.

Commenting on the selection of three of his players, Harvey’s rugby coach Phil Lazzaro said, “I am proud to state that all three of the Harvey nominees made it through the training camp, impressed the assorted coaches, and were selected.”

He said, “These three men are not only terrific athletes but also fine, upstanding young men who represent our rugby program and their schools as well.”  He expects Buckwald will play at starting Wing, Britton-Tannebaum at starting Prop, and Koonce as a reserve inside-center.

Zack Buckwald, a Harvey senior and two year captain, plans to play for Kutztown University next year. Andre Britton-Tannebaum, a graduating senior at Fox Lane High School, competed for Harvey this season. He hopes to play at Bates University.  Coach Lazzaro said playing in the all-star weekend will be beneficial to Buckwald and Britton-Tannebaum as they prepare themselves for competition on the collegiate level.

About Koonce, a junior captain who will be a senior on next year’s Harvey team, Coach Lazzaro said, “I expect the knowledge gained by Sharif will be invaluable to our squad as he returns to play for his senior season next spring.”

The all-star tournament, hosted by Wilbraham-Munson Academy in Wilbraham, Mass., is sponsored by the New England Rugby Football Union.
