Delayed School Start Possible for West Patent Elementary in Bedford District
Asbestos abatement forced the construction schedule to be reworked.
BEDFORD, NY — The Bedford Central School District is taking construction at its West Patent Elementary School down to the wire.
There are a few scenarios that could play out, depending on when teachers can get access to their classrooms so they can set them up, district officials said.
School is scheduled to begin Thursday, September 1, 2016.

The district undertook a construction project during the summer that would add two science, technology, engineering and mathematics classrooms, replace certain windows, replace lighting building-wide and perform site work.
Unfortunately, prior to the June 27 start of the project, asbestos was found that needed to be removed, and the construction schedule was reworked to account for that removal.

District officials said the amended schedule is supposed to allow teacher to have access to their classrooms as early as Monday, August 29.
Classroom furniture, supplies and materials were stored in the gymnasium and at other schools.
Should the construction timeline be further delayed teachers may not have time to prepare their classrooms for the students’ first day of classes.
The district said the construction management firm has told them a one- to four-day delay is the most likely scenario. Any days missed will be made up through the year.
