John Jay Homestead State Historic Site and the Max Pavey Chess Club will hold the thirty-sixth annual John Jay Homestead Chess Tournament on Labor Day, Monday, September 6. Registration is free of charge, and will take place between 9:00 and 9:30 a.m. in the Main Barn; all those wishing to play should arrive by this time.
Separate, concurrent tournaments will take place for adults (including teens), and for children up to age 12. The children's tournament will end around noon, while the adult tournament will conclude at 4:00 p.m. Players and their families and friends are advised to bring a bag lunch, including drink, and any snacks for the day since there are no food sales at the Homestead. Players are also requested to bring a chess board, a chess set, and a clock if possible. Certificates will be awarded for the different levels of play at the end of each tournament.
John Jay's imposing Federal-period residence, built by the Founding Father in 1801, is set among beautiful grounds, charming farm buildings, and well-tended gardens. The house will be shown by guided tour from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The cost of a tour is $7 for adults and $5 for seniors and students. Children up to age twelve and members of the Friends of John Jay Homestead are admitted free.
