An art show and sale of works by the acclaimed local artist, Walter Finlayson, will be held at the Katonah Village Library’s Bedford Road Meeting Room on October 5 and 6. The art display will be open from 1 to 9 PM each day, Friday and Saturday. The 18 oil paintings in the show are being offered to benefit the Katonah Presbyterian Church Building Fund. This art is a generous gift by Mr. Finlayson’s children, Gale and Scott Finlayson. Their generosity in making the pieces available is greatly appreciated.
Walter Finlayson (1919 to 2000) was a renowned local musician, John Jay H.S. educator, and artist. He is fondly remembered by generations of local area music students who may not have been aware of his formidable talents in fine art, particularly oil painting. His work has been featured in several venues including the Katonah Village Gallery and the Virginia Barrett Gallery in Chappaqua.
As an artist, Finlayson studied under the late H. Winfield Scott of North Salem, and excelled in abstraction and impressionism. His other paintings in this show include highly naturalistic subject matter such as traditional seascapes. The show’s paintings were especially selected from the few remaining works by Mr. Finlayson. They are full of vibrant color and are suitable accents for any wall. These are the only works currently available from this important local artist. The paintings, some of which are framed, may be purchased at the show for the listed price.
