Flower Show at Lasdon Park

It’s a Zoo,” the weekend of September 21-23, is a flower show celebrating the world of animals at Lasdon Park on Route 35 in Somers. The show is sponsored by the Ninth District of the Federated Garden Clubs of  New York State, Inc., which is part of National Garden Clubs, Inc. Judging will take place before the show opens on Friday afternoon so visitors to the show will be able to see which exhibits garnered awards. Show hours are Friday, 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free.

There will be many dozens of displays to view and learn from. Expect to see fabulous floral arrangements and prize-winning horticultural specimens, all relating to an animal theme, created by members of some of the 30 Federated Garden Clubs in the Bronx, Westchester and Putnam Counties. Educational exhibits will explore the worlds of cacti and tropical plants, including, of course, Elephant Ears (Colocasia esculenta). In the Youth Design section, youngsters will be demonstrating their design and horticultural skills with aquarium-based plaques, terrariums and desert environments.

“Especially if you are new to gardening in this area, visiting the flower show is a great way to see what plants look good around here this time of year.” said Charlotte Spiers, co-chair of the flower show. “We hope the zoo theme will stimulate creativity of show participants and lead to unusual and fun floral arrangements,” said co-chair Dee Aspros.
