In the days and weeks following the December 2012 tragedy, Heller exchanged hundreds of online messages with a self-described “medium” named Georgia O’Connor. At least one of the messages spoke about how Heller was angry and wanted to kill someone, according to authorities. During this period, Heller also acquired more than one gun.

Local police and the FBI monitored Heller, and eventually got him committed to a psychiatric facility at Westchester Medical Center where he was evaluated. District officials claimed Heller suffered from “mental illness.”

The Journal News reports that, among other arguments, Heller claims he legally acquired the guns. He also claims that he was committed to the psychiatric facility involuntarily, which contributed to his termination as a teacher.
