Harvey Varsity Boys Lacrosse Wins Again

Masters NY @ Harvey, May 4, 2012
The Harvey School’s boys varsity lacrosse team keeps winning and solidifying its high seed in this month’s HVAL playoffs. The Cavaliers, last year’s HVAL champs, improved to their record to 10 and 1 when they defeated Masters of New York 14 -7 on Friday, May 4.
Mitch Bowman opened the scoring for Harvey with two goals in the first two minutes of the game. Simon Gottesfield brought Masters within one, but Brandon Hickey scored a pair for the Cavs before the first quarter ended. Graydon Cook and Gottesfield with his second made the score 4-3 Harvey at the end of the first quarter.
Both teams scored two in a closely fought second quarter. Alexander Johns of Masters scored to tie the game, but Brett Marks put Harvey back in the lead during the eighth minute. Henry Slate scored for Masters to tie the game again before Richard Schulman put Harvey ahead by a 6-5 score at the half.
Harvey keeper James Underwood made six saves in the third quarter to keep Masters off the score sheet, and Harvey surged into the lead after Hickey put in three more and Bowman scored his third of the game before the third quarter ended. Harvey scored four more in the last quarter: freshman Keith Lambert put in two, as did senior John Bolanos. Masters scored the last two goals of the game to make the final score 14-7.
It was a cleanly played match with only five penalties. Richard Schulman had four assists for the victors, and Underwood made a total of 15 saves in the game.
Harvey’s Streak Comes to End with Loss to Chase in Baseball
Harvey’s baseball team saw two streaks come to an end Friday when Chase Collegiate of Waterbury, Ct defeated the Cavaliers by the score of 4-1.
Harvey, having chalked up two straight shutout victories, spotted Chase two runs in the first inning off the Cavaliers’ starting pitcher Jesse Zubren. Zubren then settled in and did not allow Chase to score for the next three innings until a misplayed fly ball to left field allowed the third run for Chase to score in the 5th inning.
Zubren pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing only two earned runs on six hits while walking two and striking out one. Mike Morra came in for relief for Harvey and allowed a run on two hits. For Chase, Kyle Bonicki pitched a complete game for the win only allowing five hits. He also went 3-4 at the plate.
Harvey’s lone run came in the 6th inning when Mikhyle Stein singled in Zubren who had doubled to left. With the loss, Harvey’s record is now 4-4.
