Harvey Rugby Ends Season with a Win

We thank the Harvey communications department for the below submissions:

Harvey’s rugby team ended the season Wednesday on a high note with a victory that did not come easy. Playing host to the team from Wilbraham & Monson Academy outside of Boston, the Cavaliers had a rough go of it early on as their New England visitors took advantage of some early Harvey miscues and put a converted try in the Cavaliers’ tryzone in the second minute of play.

Wilbraham kept Harvey on its heels and added a penalty conversion in the 19th minute of play.  Harvey could not seize any momentum and three knockons thwarted any offensive spirit in the half.  The Cavaliers failed to maintain possession due to some poor rucking and ineffective offensive pressure.

In the second half, Harvey improved its efforts and began to slowly execute its pattern of play. Zack Buckwald darted through the defense in the 39th minute to cut the deficit to five, but Wilbraham answered with a converted try to take a 12 point lead with 21 minutes of play remaining.

Harvey responded with a terrific run from Pleasantville High School’s junior fullback J.D. Schneider who obliterated a defender, and the Cavaliers held possession deep in Wilbraham territory. When both Andre and Mulhern were denied points, it appeared Harvey’s efforts would go for naught.

When Captain Sam Seham entered the match in the 54th minute of play, it sparked the team effort. Seham took a solid Christian Artuso delivery off a short lineout and darted to the tryzone.

He raced through four defenders only to have the ball held up in the tryzone.  But Seham found glory a minute later off an eight man pick. Stapleton’s conversion cut the deficit to five points with seven minutes remaining.  Harvey kept the pressure and the Cavaliers caused a turnover.

“With our offense regaining its composure,” Coach Phil Lazzaro said, “we began to systematically attack the defense.” The defense held three Harvey forays deep in Wilbraham territory.

When a Wilbraham infraction gave Harvey the ball five meters out, Artuso fed Seham who bulled in to tie the score at 17. Billy Stapleton’s conversion was true and Harvey held a two point lead with one minute remaining.

Things looked like they were turning against Harvey as time was winding down. “The last minute of play plus stoppage time was a little nerve-wracking for my liking,” said Coach Lazzaro.

A turnover and three penalties put Wilbraham in a position to win, but Harvey’s defense held and pushed Wilbraham’s last possession out of bounds three meters from the Cavaliers’ tryline to eke out a two point victory.

Harvey’s “B” Team Sees Action

The second side played next and they put forth their best performance to date.  Led by freshman scrumhalf Matt Abt and sophomore fullback Charlie Seider, the Cavaliers “B” put forth a dominant effort.

After the first twenty minutes Harvey finally broke through the Wilbraham defense. The Cavaliers dotted down six trys on the afternoon and Seider knocked in two conversions.  “The entire team played well to end the season,” said Coach Lazzaro.

Harvey’s Softball Season Ends with a Loss

The lack of timely hitting doomed the Harvey softball team to a season-ending loss as The Convent of the Sacred Heart beat the Cavaliers 11-3 Wednesday in Greenwich, CT. on Wednesday, May 16th.

Harvey played strong in the first two innings, making the plays and getting the outs, but a five- run 3rd inning for the home team put Heart in the lead to stay. Harvey struggled to get the bats going and left the bases loaded in several innings without bringing any runners home.

Kim Bernstein produced Harvey’s only extra-base hit, a double, and both Bernstein and Erica Cheyne led Harvey hits with three apiece. Silvana Alarcon picked up an RBI with a well-stroked hit to left in her only time at bat.

While there were few offensive highlights for Harvey, the defense pulled out a gem when leftfielder Desiree Eason initiated a double play in the 2nd by catching a fly ball and picking off a runner on second with a quick throw to Cheyne, the shortstop.

With this loss, Harvey ends its softball season with a 2-9 record.
