Greens Farms Academy @ Harvey, April 30, 2012

The Harvey School’s boys’ varsity lacrosse team keeps rolling in a quest for a repeat as HVAL Champs. In the second match between the two teams in the month of April, Harvey defeated Greens Farms Academy again, this time by an 8-3 score on Monday, April 30.When the Cavaliers of Katonah and the GFA Dragons last met on April 21, the teams battled into overtime before Harvey prevailed, 6-5.

In the rematch, seniors Mitch Bowman, Brandon Hickey, and Richard Schulman gave Harvey a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, before Chris Tarika put GFA on the board with two minutes to go in the first.   Both teams scored one more before the half in a closely-played second quarter:  Hickey, with his second for Harvey, and Brendan Bieder with his first for GFA.  The first half was notable in that there were no penalties called on either team.

In the third quarter, Bieder scored his second to bring GFA within one, but that was as close as the Dragons got.  Schulman notched his second for Harvey in the third and added another in the fourth for a hat-trick, and Hickey blasted his third for a hat-trick of his own.  Harvey’s Tim Ehlberg rounded out the scoring with a beauty before the buzzer sounded for an 8-3 final score.

James Underwood made 15 saves in the Harvey net, while Riley Grady had 13 for GFA. With the win, Harvey sports a 9 and 1 record.

Harvey LAX Defeats Watkinson

Harvey’s boys lacrosse team went on the road Saturday to defeat Watkinson of North Hartford, Conn. 13-4. Senior midfielder Brandon Hickey scored six goals and assisted on three others.  Hickey, Richard Schulman, Mitch Bowman and Connor Wilson opened the scoring in the first quarter with five goals to Watkinson’s one as Harvey set the pace early. Schulman tallied four goals of his own and had three assists as well. Harvey led 8-2 at halftime and was able to mix many of its JV players into the game in the second half of play.

Watkinson player, Rob Barry had a big game. He converted all four goals for Watkinson throughout the game.  Harvey’s Connor Wilson added two goals on the day and a single assist. His teammate, Armando Vazquez had a number of nice shots on cage and tallied an assist to Hickey late in the game. Freshman Keith Lambert played two solid quarters adding two assists with fine attack play. James Underwood played well in goal with 12 saves and Watkinson goalie Ryan Savan had 10 saves of his own.

Harvey Edges Watkinson 1-0 in Baseball

Harvey and Watkinson hooked up in a classic pitcher’s duel Saturday but the Cavaliers squeaked by with a 1-0 win. Harvey’s lone run came in the 3rd inning on a wild pitch scoring Corey Eisenband.

Will Shubert and Mike Chavkin combined to throw a three-hit shutout for Harvey. Adomgit threw a complete game for Watkinson striking out 13 batters in a losing effort. He allowed only three hits. Shubert pitched four and two-thirds, allowing two hits, striking out six and walking three. Chavkin got the save as he closed out the game, allowing only one hit while striking out three and walking one.

Watkinson’s biggest threat came in the 1st inning when they had the bases loaded with one out. Shubert then struck out the #5 hitter and induced a ground ball to the following batter, allowing Harvey to escape that early jam. Mike Morra, Jesse Zubren, and Corey Eisenband had the hits for Harvey.

Harvey Baseball Loses to Forman

Forman @Harvey 4/25/12

Harvey’s varsity baseball team dropped a 9-2 decision to Forman Wednesday. Things started off well for Harvey in their first at-bat when the Cavaliers took the early lead Mike Morra singled, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Corey Eisenband, and scored on a passed ball.

It was a short-lived lead for Harvey as Forman battled back in the bottom of the first and scored four runs. Harvey pushed another run across the plate in the 2nd inning on a sacrifice fly by Jason Ecker scoring Will Schubert. Those two runs would be it for the Cavaliers as their bats went quiet the rest of the way.

Two more Forman runs came home in the second inning as the visitors stroked a couple of hits and capitalized on some sloppy defense by Harvey. Jesse Zubren, the starting pitcher for Harvey, gave up eight runs, but only four were earned. He allowed six hits, walked two, and struck out two. Mike Chavkin relieved Zubren and gave up a run on two hits in two innings.
