The Harvey School’s varsity girls' lacrosse team dropped its Housatonic Valley Athletic League season opener to visiting Chase Collegiate, 12-6 Wednesday in Katonah.

Led by captains Nikki Pugliese and Leila Zuaiter, the Lady Cavaliers played a fierce first half. The teams were well matched and featured solid, experienced goalkeepers, such as Harvey's Hannah Slivka, who had thirteen saves during the game. The tenacity of senior Kelin Jimenez and the hustle of sophomore Sammy Aloi led the strong Harvey defense.

Harvey scored first with a goal by sophomore Julia Peraglia who was assisted by Pugliese. The two teams battled for the lead throughout the first half.  Two Harvey sophomores, Melissa Wyman and Audrey Rowe, helped the Cavaliers keep pace. Wyman scored once and Rowe twice before the half ended in a 4-4 tie.

Chase was the more dominant team in the second half. Taylor Brady of Chase scored a hat trick within the first minute of the second half. Despite the continued intensity of Harvey's midfield and goals by Wyman and Pugliese, Harvey could not hold off Chase’s offensive attack as the Cavaliers were outscored 8-2 in the second half.

Harvey Boys Win Big in Lacrosse

Harvey’s boys’ varsity lacrosse team is perfect after two games. The Cavaliers, the 2011 HVAL Champions, improved their 2012 record to 2-0 Wednesday with a 10-2 road victory against Master’s, NY in Dobbs Ferry.

Harvey put up four goals during the first quarter, after struggling to find the cage on 12 shots. The Cavaliers possessed the ball well offensively and pressured the Master’s team to turn the ball over six times in transition.

Leading 4-0 after the first quarter, Harvey scored one goal in the second quarter, two in the third, and three in the fourth while Master’s scored one goal in the second quarter and one in the third.

Brandon Hickey and Richard Schulman had three goals apiece for Harvey. Also scoring for the Cavaliers were Mitch Bowman with two and Collin Kraus and Connor Wilson with one each. Getting assists were Hickey with four, Schulman with three and Wilson with two. Goalkeeper Alex Trister made two saves for Harvey in the first half, and James Underwood made three in the second half.

Master’s, now 1-2 on the season, had goals from Graydon Cook and Alex Jahns.

Harvey Softball Suffers Second Loss in a Row

On Wednesday, April 11th Harvey’s varsity softball team fought the cold conditions and could not muster enough of an offense as the Cavaliers dropped a 23-8 decision at home to the Christian Heritage School of Trumbull, Connecticut.

Harvey got down early in the first few innings, and although at times seemed to gain momentum, could not overcome the early deficit. Pitchers on both teams struggled to throw strikes.  Each team had 17 walks.

Defensively, Brittany Sullivan at shortstop had a strong showing, as did 7th grade pitcher Hannah Paul. Paul pitched 6.1 innings and earned a 41.5% strike percentage. Offensively, Harvey centerfielder Martha Slivka led her team in RBI’s with 3 while catcher Kim Bernstein chipped in with 2.

With this loss, Harvey’s record is now 1-2.
