Harvey’s 26-23 loss to Poughkeepsie Day School on Friday, April 13 was a difficult defeat to take as the Lady Cavaliers dropped a close one in a non-league game.

Walks and a few key hits kept Harvey in the game, but the team’s defense faltered. Throughout the  game, the Cavaliers would earn two quick outs, and then struggle to get the third.

Pitcher Kelly Barker put in a strong effort, earning 5 strike outs and a 65.2% strike percentage. Shortstop Andersen Greenwood and outfielder Martha Slivka led the team in offense and defense. Each stroked a double and earned a significant amount of outs throughout the game.

The Cavaliers left the bases loaded in every inning except two when they stranded runners on 2nd and 3rd. Not being able to capitalize on their many scoring opportunities cost Harvey a chance to overtake Poughkeepsie Day.

Baseball

Harvey defeated Poughkeepsie Day School, 25-4, in a varsity baseball game Friday, April 13. The Cavaliers jumped out early with three runs in the first and then erupted for 15 runs in the second inning.

Mikhyle Stein, who stroked a bases clearing triple, led the surge offensively for Harvey. Stein walked three times and scored three runs. Corey Eisenbrand, Jesse Zubren, and Russell Pober each went 2 for 2 to contribute to a Harvey offense that totaled 11 hits.

Mike Chavkin, who threw three innings of no-hit ball and struck out five, got the win for the Cavaliers. Mckie Perry pitched the last two innings to close out the victory for Harvey.

April 16 – Hyde Park Baptist

A two-run single by Harvey’s McKie Perry capped a late-game rally that saw the Cavaliers overcome a six-run deficit and defeat Hyde Park Baptist Monday, 8-6. Perry’s game-winning hit in the sixth inning followed a two-run double by Jason Ecker.

Michael Coakaham of Hyde Park Baptist had stymied the Harvey bats for five innings, holding the Cavaliers to one run before they mounted their rally in the 6th to take the lead. Harvey’s Mike Chavkin picked up his second win of the season with three scoreless innings in relief for starter Mike Morra.

Chavkin, who allowed no hits in his three innings, struck out six.  Jesse Zubren pitched a scoreless 7th inning, striking out two and earning his first save of the year.

Harvey Girls Lacrosse

Harvey’s girls varsity lacrosse team played host to the Forman School Wednesday and secured its first victory of the season with a 10-5 win.  Both teams played tough defense from the start with stellar efforts from Harvey senior Kelin Jimenez and speedy sophomore Sammy Aloi.

Senior captain Nikki Pugliese of the Cavaliers was first to score, but Forman responded quickly with a pair of goals. As the half wound down, it looked like Forman would hold the lead, but Pugliese scored twice more before the half, giving Harvey the lead 4-3.

Both teams came out of the half poised to take control, but Harvey managed to put more balls in the net. Sophomore Audrey Rowe scored first, assisted by sophomore Natasha Stein. Junior Abby Hassett scored a pair of goals, and captain Leila Zuaiter scored once and added an assist. With the stronger offense, a hat trick from Rowe and another goal from Pugliese, Harvey held Forman in check as senior Rachel Miles and sophomore Alex Pennella helped maintain their team’s strong defense.

Harvey Boys Remain Perfect in Lacrosse

Last year’s HVAL Lacrosse Champions are on a roll in the 2012 spring season.  The Harvey Cavaliers are now 5-0 after a home field victory Wednesday against Wooster.

Senior midfielder Brandon Hickey gave Harvey the lead at 7:12 of the first quarter, but Wooster quickly tied it up. Freshman Connor Wilson put Harvey back in the lead, and senior midfielder Richard Schulman added two to put Harvey up 4-1 at the quarter.

In the second quarter, senior Mitch Bowman had a hat-trick, Wilson and Hickey each scored again, and senior Brett Marks added a single to give Harvey a 10-2 lead at the half.

Both teams scored two in the third quarter, with Bowman and Marks hitting the twine for Harvey.  In the fourth quarter, Wooster scored three times, but sophomore Andrew Schwartz shot one in the net for Harvey’s last goal and a 13-7 final score.

Senior Alex Trister made 11 saves in the Harvey net.
