Masters NY defeated Harvey by the score of 12-1 on Wednesday.  Masters came out mashing right from the start, scoring nine runs in the first two innings off Harvey starter Will Schubert. This huge deficit knocked Harvey back on its heels, forcing the Cavaliers to tr play catch-up the rest of the way.

Mike Morra came in for relief and did a nice job surrendering only two earned runs the rest of the way. For Masters, the catcher Lizardo had a nice game going 3-3 with a walk. He had three runs, two RBIs and two stolen bases.

For the Cavaliers, Jesse Zubren singled home Mikhyle Stein for their only run of the game.

Harvey Rugby Shuts Out Stamford Academy

It was a homecoming of sorts for Stamford Academy’s rugby coach, Harvey School alum Jeremy Kosbob, who lost to his alma mater Wednesday 36-0 at John Jay High School’s field.

Harvey, looking to build on the past three weeks of positive play and practice, came out of the starting gate with plenty of intensity.  In just the second minute of play, the backline executed a new play which led to a great ball hitting Zack Buckwald at pace. Buckwald raced 45 meters for Harvey’s first points.

Harvey struck again in the sixth minute as senior lock Matt Castleton took control of an errant kick and found glory to increase the Harvey lead to ten.  Stamford regained its defensive discipline for the next fifteen minutes and thwarted Harvey’s incursions.

In the 29th minute of play, however, following a solid possession, Buckwald broke through the Stamford backline and travelled 43 meters for his second score of the afternoon.  Two minutes later Sam Seeham found points and Nick Gattuso’s conversion put Harvey up at halftime by 22 points.

Harvey controlled much of the play in the second half and stuck to its game plan.  Solid forward play coupled with some nicely executed kicks kept Stamford at bay.  In the 62nd and 68th minutes of play Billy Stapleton and Cam Chase scored to seal the victory.  Coach Phil Lazzaro said the entire team played well in all facets of the game.  He cited Rookie Connor Moore’s steady improvement which has helped fortify his team’s backline. Coach Lazzaro also saw exceptional play from three other players. “Kieran O’Connor was a pest all day in defensive lineouts and our scrumhalf rotation of Nick Gattuso and Christian Artuso linked the forwards and backs well all day.”

Harvey’s “B” Struggles in Match against Greenwich

The B-side played Greenwich following the match.  The Cavaliers had a bad first half as Greenwich scored five unanswered trys. In the second half the Cavaliers played a much smarter and physical brand of rugby and held Greenwich scoreless.  Spellacy dotted down for Harvey’s lone points in this match.

Harvey Rugby Loses to Xavier

Xavier @ Harvey, May 5, 2012

Harvey kept pace with the visiting Xavier High School’s rugby team for the first half, but the Cavaliers lost some steam in the second half as Xavier wound up the winner, 21-5.

Realizing they hand their hands full against a perennial rugby powerhouse, the Cavaliers came out and played a physical and energetic match.  The first half was a back and forth affair with Xavier slightly out-possessing Harvey.  Both defenses showed great resolve, and as the clock wound down to halftime, the scoreboard had not been dented yet.  Unfortunately, in stoppage time, Xavier capitalized on Harvey’s players being winded and crashed in for a converted try as time expired to take a seven point lead. Harvey’s coach, Phil Lazzaro said, “Our boys played well in the first half and were a bit unlucky to trail at the whistle.”

In the second half Harvey found points in the 39th minute following some nice work by the forwards.  Harvey attacked from 22 meters out and senior Captain Sam Seham outraced and outmuscled three Xavier defenders and dotted down for a try.  Xavier maintained its slim two- point lead for the next ten minutes. Both teams had a few opportunities for points, but in the 49th minute, Xavier capitalized on two successive Harvey infringements to crash into the Cavaliers’ tryzone.  Harvey refused to yield and possessed the ball for the next five minutes of play.  Seham nearly broke another and the forwards and backs were linking up well together.

In the 56th minute Harvey’s efforts led to a penalty attempt for points but the kick missed a meter to the left.  Both teams pressed for points, and in the 67th minute Xavier broke through Harvey’s backline and raced 32 meters for points.  Harvey refused to quit and kept fighting till the end.  The Cavaliers pressured Xavier for the remainder. Brian Theiss came close to scoring in the 72nd minute but the referee ruled it a miss. Coach Lazzaro said, “Our boys put forth a tremendous and quality effort against a well skilled and powerful opponent.”  “Sam Seham did a terrific job all afternoon in the loose and the forwards played with some much sought after attitude standing toe-to-toe with the boys from Xavier,” said the coach.

The Second Fifteen match started off poorly for Harvey.  Xavier ran in six unanswered trys in the first half before Harvey’s younger players recaptured some level of composure.  A nicely executed lineout to Guillermo Leon led to a Harvey try by Matt Sturm as halftime came soon after.  In the second half, Harvey played a more physical game and played stronger defense.  Xavier worked hard to score, but Harvey held them to one second half try.  JD Schneider and Andre Brittis-Tannebaum ran through the Xavier defense for Harvey’s second and third trys in this match.

Harvey Boys J V Lacrosse Loses to King

Harvey at King, May 1, 2012

The Harvey School’s boys junior varsity lacrosse team dropped a 6-2 decision to King on May 1 on King’s home artificial turf.  Julien Higgs scored the first goal of the game to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead with less than a minute remaining in the first quarter. The Vikings did all of the scoring in the second quarter, with Marco Miely and Ethan Thomson scoring two goals each on Harvey keeper Alex Trister, who made 10 saves during the first half.  King led 4-1 at the half.

Jake Cohn scored during the third minute of the fourth quarter to bring Harvey within two, but Miely and Thomson each put in one more for King during the last two minutes, when Harvey was pressing hard but couldn’t find the twine.

Both teams played hard gaining valuable experience in preparation for future varsity games, and they also played a clean game, with each team assessed only one penalty.  Keith Lambert led all Harvey shooters with four shots on goal, and Marcus Plummer made six saves for Harvey during the second half.

Harvey Softball Loses to Poughkeepsie Day

Harvey @ PDS, Tuesday, May 1

Sloppy first-inning defense by Harvey’s varsity softball team and healthy hitting by the Poughkeepsie Day School offense resulted in a 13-run bat-around for PDS. Although playing well at times, the Cavaliers could not make up for the disastrous opening inning, as Harvey suffered its third loss in a row, Tuesday, 24-18.

Harvey bats were strong, producing 22 hits in the game. Martha Slivka had a big day at the plate, collecting five base hits and three RBIs. Pitcher Kelly Barker, third baseman Anderson Greenwood, and left fielder Silvana Alacon stroked three hits apiece. Barker had four runs batted in. Catcher Kim Bernstein and right fielder Emily Pollack each had two hits and knocked in two runs.

Barker, who took the loss, went the distance on the mound for Harvey, striking out three and walking three. Harvey’s record dropped to 2-7.
