Harvey Girls Softball No-Hitter; Girls LAX, Boys Tennis Advance to Title Games

Selena Cummings of Ossining did herself one better Wednesday as she pitched her Harvey softball team to a 17-4 victory, no-hitting Faith Christian Academy. Cummings, a sophomore, had tossed two one-hitters earlier this season, but this time she completely overmatched her opponents in striking out 12. 

Cummings also made big contributions to the offense, collecting three of Harvey’s 12 hits. Her battery-mate, catcher Anderson Greenwood, had a big day at the plate as well, as the senior captain banged out four hits, including a triple and a double. She also stole five bases and scored four runs. Sophomore first baseman Jasmine Brouwer stroked two hits and produced three RBI. Senior captain Silvana Alarcon swiped six bases. 

Harvey set the tone in the first inning by scoring four runs before Faith Christian had a chance to bat. The Lady Cavaliers added five more in the second and led 12-3 at the end of three innings. Harvey scored in every inning except the final inning. 

While Cummings was pitching a gem, the defense for both teams was sloppy. Harvey made five errors and Faith Christian made four. 

Cummings, who walked four, gave up four runs, but none earned, in her complete game victory. Her coach, Jackie Kelm had strong praise for her ace. “All season Selena has been a great force on the mound. She plays hard and gets the job done, no question.” 

Coach Kelm said the victory ends Harvey’s softball season on a high note but not without some sadness. “We have five seniors who have been in this program since I began coaching four years ago. It was bittersweet to see them play their last game.”

With a 5-4 season now behind them, Coach Kelm sees brighter days ahead for the Lady Cavaliers. “We have a lot of young talent who will only get better. I'm glad we ended the season with a win and came out on top with a record over the .500 mark.” 

Harvey Girls Lacrosse Advances to Title Game

Harvey’s girls lacrosse team, the #1 seed in the HVAL tournament for the first time in school history, will play in the championship game for the second year in a row. The Lady Cavaliers defeated Forman Wednesday, 13-5, in a semifinal match, earning the right to play at home in Saturday’s championship game. 

Harvey’s victory over Forman was led by senior Audrey Rowe's laser beam of a shot as she scored four goals. Fellow seniors Brittany Smith and Sammi Aloi continued to find the back of the net, adding three goals apiece. Seventh grader Sophia Scarsella deposited two goals and sophomore Melissa Shaw-Patino added one. Senior Julia Peraglia stepped up on defense and helped junior goalie Ariana Weaver shut down Forman's attack. 

Harvey coach Greg Janos said his team played a championship caliber game. “We worked as a team today for the complete game. The girls looked ready and you could see the fire in their eyes. Today we stuck to our game plan and played Cavalier lacrosse. Controlling the draw and transitioning quickly into attack mode gave us the upper hand and allowed us to dominate most of the game play. This will be extremely important to continue in the championship game.” 

Coach Janos said his team’s goal is win a championship for Harvey. “We reached the first of our season's goals by finishing first in the league at the end of the regular season. Now that we are in the playoffs, our goal is to win the whole thing. We are one big win away from accomplishing that feat as well.” 

The HVAL championship game Saturday starts at 4 p.m. on RK field at The Harvey School. Harvey’s opponent will either be Chase Collegiate or Watkinson School.

Harvey Boys Tennis Goes for Third Straight HVAL Title

Harvey’s boys tennis team continued its unbeaten season Wednesday with a hard fought 6-3 HVAL semifinal victory over the South Kent School at Bedford Hills Memorial Courts. 

Harvey, the two time defending league champions, got off to a quick start against South Kent with the #1 and #2 singles players Alec Roslin and Harry Solomon winning by the scores of 10-1 and 10-2. Zach Schwartz, in a crucial victory, defeated his opponent 10-8 at number three singles. 

After dropping #4 and #5 singles, Harvey got a win in the #6 singles match as Jordan Fox won in convincing fashion 10-1. With Fox’s victory, the Cavaliers only needed to win one doubles match to win their 13th consecutive match of the year. This was done quickly with the #1 doubles pairing of Solomon and Roslin winning at #1 doubles 8-2.

Coach Marty Bernstein said, “It’s been consistency and mental toughness throughout the season that has been the hallmark of this team and a key to its success.” 

If Harvey wins the title match Saturday, the senior led team will have completed the second unbeaten season in the last three years and will have its third consecutive HVAL title. “Win or lose,” Coach Bernstein said, “I am very proud of the boys and the effort they have put in this season.”
