The Harvey School’s boys’ lacrosse team finished the regular season this past week in fine style, winning two of their most challenging games all year against Forman on Wednesday May 9th and South Kent on Friday, May 11th. The Cavaliers completed their most successful season in recent memory with a 14-1 record and have taken the top seed in the HVAL playoffs, which begins this week.

The Forman matchup last Wednesday, May 9 made for a truly exciting lacrosse battle with three scoring drives on both sides of the ball. Harvey opened up the game with a 6-0 run, led by Brandon Hickey who scored three of his total of six on the game. Forman inched back a bit in the second with 3 points and Harvey’s Mitch Bowman answered with one to make the half-time total 7-3.

The 3rd quarter was all Forman who responded with four goals in 5 minutes, led by former Harvey attack-man Bryce Benza, but Harvey regained its composure at the break and scored two goals at the end of the 3rd and six more in the fourth. The final was 15-9 Harvey. This win sealed Harvey’s undefeated Division 3 season as the Cavaliers took home the Division 3 New England Title.

Friday May 11th shaped up to be a huge finish for the Cavaliers as they faced their dreaded Division 2 rival, South Kent. After falling short of a victory against the strong Kent athletic program in the last eight years, Harvey’s time had definitely come.

Offensively, the Cavaliers got off to a slow start. They were held to no goals in the first as South Kent racked up two in the first 12 minutes and a third early in the second. Junior Goalie, James Underwood had one of his finest games in net, stopping a staggering six shots in the first quarter alone to keep the Cavaliers alive. He would finish the game with 15 saves.

Harvey responded to Underwood’s efforts and a sobering time-out in the second to score seven unanswered goals in the second quarter. The go ahead goal by Senior John Bolanos gave the Cavaliers great momentum and South Kent began to fall apart with numerous penalties throughout the match, allowing Harvey the control of the offensive ball it so desperately needed.

Brandon Hickey’s efforts at faceoff and three goals in the quarter led the Cavaliers to a 7-3 lead at halftime. At that point, the squad never looked back. A crucial 3rd period gave Harvey one more score and shut out the South Kent attack. Schulman notched two goals in the fourth along with Hickey’s fifth to seal the win and finish the regular season with a dominant victory 11-4 over South Kent.

The inaugural Housatonic Valley League Championship tournament begins this week. Harvey, as the top seed, will play at home in the semifinals on Friday May 18th and if all goes well, May 19th in the Championship game.
