Katonah -Harvey’s thrilling last second victory Saturday over South Kent gave the Cavaliers the HVAL championship for the second year in a row but also qualified them to play in a highly competitive New England small schools tournament for the first time in over ten years.
Harvey, 16-1 overall, was undefeated in games against Western New England Preparatory School Lacrosse Association (WNEPSLA) Division 3 rivals. The Cavaliers’ only loss of the season came at the hands of St. Luke’s, a WNEPSLA Division 2 team who plays in the tournament Wednesday against Hamden Hall.

Harvey will face the winner of that match-up on Friday. A victory would mean Harvey would move on to play a team from the East.
Harvey’s coach, Jason Hill, still unwinding from his team’s exciting win Saturday, said the back and forth game for the HVAL title sent him on an emotional rollercoaster.
In the timeout he called with the game knotted at 6-6, Coach Hill said he called the ‘rotate play’ and designed it with all-star midfielder Brandon Hickey in mind. “Hickey told me, ‘Just give me the ball, coach,’ and so we did,” Coach Hill recalled.
There was a little more than two minutes left when play resumed.
”It was a little more exciting than I wanted it to be,” said the coach who saw his team undergo a battle royale for the last two minutes of the tie game. “My heart was in my throat,” Coach Hill said.
With just nine seconds left, Hickey had the ball. He darted past his defender and fired a left-handed shot into the net for the game-winner that gave Harvey the HVAL championship and set the Cavaliers up for a New England tournament bid.
Harvey has no time to rest on its laurels. Coach Hill said the team will spend the next few days getting ready, watching films, “and staying loose.”
Coach Hill says getting a bid to play New England teams is something his core of seniors “deserve for working so hard and for playing so well for four years.”
He said playing in the tournament “shows we are a very competitive and very capable small school team.”
The small schools competition involves some of the toughest teams in New England. “We like being the underdog,” Coach Hill said. “We seem to thrive on it.”
Harvey will know Wednesday evening who their next opponent will be and where they we will need to travel.
