John Jay High School Students Wins Emerging Artist Scholarship

The young woman wants to become a professional playwright.

Katonah, NY — A John Jay High School sophomore in Katonah won a scholarship from the Palace Theatre for the Performing Arts in Stamford, Connecticut.

Isabelle Pierce was awarded $500 as part of her second place prize in the 2016 Emerging Young Artists Scholarship.

More than 50 students from across the tri-state region applied for the scholarship, for which they could either write a 15-minute, one-act play or perform a monologue from a play.

Pierce said she is hoping to pursue a career as a playwright and will be studying at Sewanee Young Writers Conference this summer.

She recently had a play workshopped at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in its Young Playwright’s Festival.

Pierce and the other winners will have the opportunity to see their plays come to life as part of the Student new Play Festival at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 29.

The event is free to the public but reservations are necessary to ensure a seat. For tickets, call the box office Monday through Friday, from noon to 5 p.m. at 203-325-4466.
