Katonah Man Sentenced for Not Paying State Taxes

He failed to file for three consecutive years.

KATONAH, NY — A Katonah man who failed to pay state taxes was sentenced Wednesday.

Barry Shevit, 68, was sentenced to five years probation after previously pleading guilty to one count of felony repeated failure to file personal returns, Acting Westchester County District Attorney James A. McCarty said.

An investigation into Shevit’s consignment business by the DA’s office lead to the accusation. He was arrested March 20, 2015.

He failed to file personal income tax returns for three consecutive years.

McCarty said in 2011, the taxes he owed were $10,153. In 2012, it was $3,112, and in 2013, it was $6,281.

The total amount of unpaid taxes, including prior tax years, is about $28,862.

Shevit will be required to make complete restitution of that amount by the end of his probation.
