Letter to the Editor: Marist Alum Urges College to Decline Inauguration Invitation
The Marist College Marching Band has been invited to perform during Donald J. Trump's inauguration activities.

An open letter to Marist College officials:
Dear Director of Music and Bands Arthur Himmelberger,
As an alumnus of an institution taught by the Marist Brothers and as someone who is among those marginalized by the history, behavior, rhetoric and stated intentions of the new administration — I find it a sad choice for Marist College Marching Band to participate in the upcoming inauguration.

With all due respect, there is much more at stake here than the momentary fanfare that comes with such an invitation. There is nothing patriotic about endorsing an administration so far out of bounds with the vast diversity of the community and alumni of Marist College and our country. Marist College’s acceptance of the invitation assures its legacy will include crossing the boundaries of justice and love, let alone its witness and reputation. Sooner or later, regardless of the cost, we all need to make choices that are based on who we are, rather than the excitement of any performance — large or small. The bar is set higher for Marist College, as it should be, and I sincerely request that you decline with grace the invitation before you.

The critical voice of Marist College — for this and the days to come — will be impacted by your decision. To be heard, one needs to speak up. Your actions declining this invitation will speak loudly against the divisiveness and disillusionment of “moving on” as a solution to what has preceded us. I look to you with hope and trust that Marist College Marching Band will not be in the lineup on January 20th, leading us forward, as you have done before.
Sincerely,
(Rev.) Ray Bagnuolo, White Plains
