Harvey’s Rugby Team Comes Up Short against New Rochelle

We thank the Harvey Communications Department for the below submissions:

Harvey hosted league rivals New Rochelle Wednesday afternoon under ideal conditions for a rugby match.  The Cavaliers, looking to open their league season with a victory, came out firing after the opening whistle.

Harvey possessed the ball early on and was solid in contact.  In the 7th minute of play the Cavaliers were rewarded as Zach Buckwald found the tryzone following some heavy, forceful pounding forward rucks. Nick Gattuso converted to give Harvey a seven point lead.  Harvey continued to pressure New Rochelle and following some nice work by Christian Harrington, Harvey was rewarded a penalty, but Gattuso’s 20 meter kick was off line.

In the 26th minute of play Harvey found points again as Buckwald touched down to increase Harvey’s lead to twelve points.  Both teams continued at a fast pace into stoppage time. Harvey began to concede some penalties (five in 4 minutes) and New Rochelle capitalized to cut their deficit to 7 entering the half.

The first twenty minutes of the second half saw some fairly strong rugby although neither team could find points. The tide began to turn soon after. In the 65th minute, Buckwald received a yellow card for a foul. Playing a man down, Harvey saw New Rochelle capitalize a minute later, and their conversion knotted the score at twelve.

In the 69th minute, Harvey showed fortitude and pressured New Rochelle.  These efforts yielded points as Billy Stapleton nailed a 24 meter kick to give Harvey a 3- point lead. Two minutes later, prop Buddy Rice received a yellowcard and Harvey was forced to play two men short.

In the 72nd minute, New Rochelle carved up Harvey’s weary defense and raced 70 meters to take a four point lead. The boys from Harvey continued on.  In stoppage time, the Cavaliers forced a turnover, and after three phases, the backs had a run.

The ball found its way to Harvey fullback, JD Schneider who bulled into the tryzone. Stapleton’s conversion gave Harvey a three point lead.

Six minutes after Harvey’s go ahead try was scored, New Rochelle, following several Harvey penalties, went ahead with a game winning try. Harvey had several opportunities to thwart the attack but fell just short.

Final Score – New Rochelle 24, Harvey 22.

Harvey’s “B” Side Plays Well

The second side completed the day with an entertaining and physical match.  Led by freshman Matt Abt and sophomores Christian Artuso and Will Leventhal, the Cavaliers played well.  The forwards were consistent in their rucking and scrummaging.

Matt Sturm, Luke Cunningham, Nate Alexander and Banks led the way.  In the second half, Artuso retrieved his own kick and raced 70 meters for a score.  New Rochelle rallied late to knot the score at five. Charlie Seider and Ben Brimelow played well in the backline and helped lead the defensive charge. The match was called on account of darkness.

The A side travels to Keio next Monday and the Killer B’s will host Greenwich on Monday.
