Political campaigns produce a lot of waste and caring deeply about sustainability causes a troubling dichotomy. Lawn signs are the necessary evil of political campaigns. Whether they work or not is up for debate and as my son says, ‘Lawn signs don’t vote,’ but here we are. So, the day after the election, I find myself collecting them and have brought cars full to the recycling center. But are there ways to reuse them? You bet!

1- Remember cafeteria tray sledding?

Cut the sign into strips, paint over, and use to identify your vegetables and herbs.

3- Portable chalkboard

Cover with chalkboard paint and Voila! Plus, it’s light and portable.

4- Thirsty?

Advertise your lemonade stand this summer with freshly covered signs and turn the political into the charitable or entrepreneurial.

5-Send a Message!

Cover with paint and make your next Women’s March or Climate Rally sign.

6-Hold it.

Use the metal stakes to anchor yard décor that might take off in windy weather.

7-Perennial signs!

Paint over and announce something else: tag sales, college graduation, tag sales, new birth, tag sales…

8-Reuse… and reuse... and reuse…

Use it as a drop cloth for small projects when you paint or stain.

9-Bag support:

We all need to use our reusable bags. Cut out a piece of sign and use it to make a stable support for the bottom of your bags.

10- Feeling crafty?

Make storage boxes:

The best scenario is not to put more product into the environment if we can avoid it. But, if we can’t, find ways to reuse as much as we can. If you have more ideas on how to repurpose and upcycle lawn signs, share in the comments.
