Poughkeepsie Women's March Across the Hudson to Be Held Saturday

The peaceful, nonpartisan march is open to anyone.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — A peaceful, nonpartisan march will take place Saturday, the day after Inauguration Day, on the Walkway Over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie.

The Poughkeepsie Women’s March Across the Hudson is just one of hundreds of events happening Saturday, Jan. 21 around the country.

Organizers said on the march’s website that it will provide “a platform for supporters of equality to rally and march in the promotion of civil rights for all — regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, ethnicity, disability religion or creed.”

The march is being led by women, but is for everyone, regardless of gender or race, organizers said.

It will begin at the Poughkeepsie entrance of the Walkway, with assembly at 8:50 a.m. and the march starting at 9 a.m. The march will go across the Walkway to the Lloyd side and return to the Poughkeepsie entrance.

From the website:

While each person may have their own reasons for marching, the mission is to bring people together to take a stand on issues that deeply impact all of us:
• We march to reaffirm the core values of freedom and democracy for all at a time when many fear that their voices will be lost, especially as related to women’s rights, immigrant rights, worker rights, reproductive rights, LGBTQIA rights, environmental rights, rights for all races, and religious freedom.
• We march in solidarity with communities most affected by hate, intolerance and acts of violence.
• We march to send a message to our leaders that we stand for human dignity, equal rights and freedom from discrimination—and that they must too.

As of Tuesday morning, more than 900 people have registered to attend. To register, go here.

No backpacks will be permitted, organizers said. Signs are welcome, but it’s against the law to attach a handle of any sort to the sign.

Donations, which are not required but are being requested to cover cost of permits and insurance, can be made online here. Any excess funds will be donated to Family Services in Poughkeepsie.
