Yorktown Heights—After a cool and rainy week, the skies cleared and the air warmed for The Mental Health Association of Westchester’s (MHA) 2014 MHA on the move 5K Run/Walk and 1-Mile Kids’ Race held at FDR State Park on May 4. More than $40,000 was raised for MHA’s mental health programs and services.

Special guest, WCBS-TV’s Lou Young emceed, along with Kayla Longergan and Brittany Drahos, Miss Hudson Valley Teen and Miss Hudson Valley. Putnam Valley School’s A Capella group started the morning off with a powerful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner and returned after the race with two more tunes.

 

Speakers were co-chairs Ann Mandel Laitman and Randi Silverman, who talked movingly of their experience with mental health issues in their own families. 

 

The top overall male runners were Irving Quintero of Mohegan Lake (19:53), Mike Wax of Mohegan Lake (19:57) and Welfur Ramon of Shrub Oak (20:14). Top overall female winners were Michelle Flesaker of New York  (21:21), Jenny Kurz of New Rochelle (21:29) and Katlyn Dibello of Mahopac (21:54).

 

Board President, Michael Lombardi, applauded the effort: “MHA on the move Run/Walk is a one of my favorite events—bringing together the many people in our community who support and care about the cause.”

 

MHA is a community-based mental health agency that has been helping Westchester County residents for 68 years through direct services, professional and community education and advocacy.
