On April 10-14 local teens on the New Canaan YMCA Aquinas Synchronized Swim team earned 3rd in the Junior High Point Team Award competing at the Junior US National Championships in Mesa, Arizona. 

In the Solo event, Emma Baranski earned 3rd. In the duet event, Baranski and Emily Drew took 5th. In the Team event Mina Shah (Lewisboro), Baranski, Drew, Renee Collett, Selena Liu, Eliza Sturgeon, Rebecca Trinklein and Erin Wheeler scored 5th place.

“This is the best our team has ever done in the High Point Standings at Junior Nationals,” said Head Coach Jen Muzyk. “The team performed well and the girls all supported each other through the week of competition.”

Nineteen Aquianas earned spots at the national championships based on high scores at qualifying meets. Here they met up with 225 swimmers from 30 teams, including three collegiate squads (Stanford, Minnesota and Incarnate Word).

This is USA Synchro’s most important and prestigious championship of the year.

In the Combo event, 6th place went to the combo team of Baranski, Julianne Beck, Amelia Clark, Collett, Liu, Shah, Sturgeon, Trinklein, Wheeler and Emily Roney. 13th place went to the combo team of Alexandra Lin (Lewisboro), Diya Banerjee, Kate Dalia, Sarah Dittmeier, Jessie Kravet, Isabella Montgomery, Jennifer O’Neill and Ophelie Tousignant.  In the Figures event, Baranski scored 3rd and Drew scored 5th.

Swertfager Delivers

John Jay's Theresa Swertfager went 2 for 4 with a home run and a double for the Indians in their 6-4 loss to visiting Brewster on April 30 according to Rob Cristino's post on the LoHud Softball Blog.

Foxes Nipped

Cristino also reported that on the same day, Fox Lane lost 9-8 against visiting Valhalla.

Fox Lane's Alexis Bazos and Erin Vanzandt had two RBI each.

Boys Lacrosse

Fox Lane lost to Rye in double overtime 7-6 on April 30 according to Mike Dougherty's post on the LoHud Boys Lacrosse Blog.
