Tough Loss to Newark Academy for Harvey School's Varsity Football Team

The Katonah-based school played on the road in Livingston, NJ, over the weekend.

The following press release is from The Harvey School:

The Harvey varsity football team lost 32-16 on the road against Newark Academy in Livingston, New Jersey, Saturday in a game that was much closer than the score would indicate.

After a scoreless first quarter, Newark drew first blood early in the second when it sacked Harvey quarterback Tom Smith in the end zone for a safety. Newark scored on the ensuing possession on a 30-yard pass and took an 8-0 lead into halftime.

The third quarter, like most of the game, was a battle in the trenches as both teams made big plays to thwart drives and frustrate the offense. Newark went up 14-0 late in the third quarter on a 55-yard drive.

In the fourth quarter Smith fired a 29-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Mike DePass and the two-point conversion cut the deficit to six with eight minutes left. But two quick scores by Newark, one on a four-yard run and the other set up after an interception on the Harvey 40-yard line, put the game out of reach. Harvey scored again on a 16-yard run by Smith, but the ensuing on-side kick was unsuccessful and Newark scored again on a 46-yard run.

The defense was led by senior captain Jared Finkel with 11 tackles, DePass with nine and junior captain Javen Stepp-Davis with eight tackles, a sack and a blocked extra point. Sophomore Teddy Little added seven tackles and two sacks, junior Jordan Washington had five, senior Jameson Scarsella had four and a sack and senior Alex Bae of Bedford and junior Nate Gold had four tackles each.

The Cavaliers, now 1-4, host the Knights of the New York Military Academy Saturday, Nov. 1.
