Harvey Loses to St. Luke’s in New England Semi-Final Game

The Harvey School’s boys' lacrosse team, winners of a second consecutive HVAL championship this season, came within inches of a chance for a New England small schools championship, but St. Luke’s literally held on to a 5-4 lead Friday to defeat the Cavaliers in the semi-final of the New England Division II/III Tournament in New Canaan, Conn. It was only the second loss Harvey suffered this year and both came at the hands of St. Luke’s Crusaders.

By virtue of having defeated South Kent last Saturday in the HVAL championship game, Harvey became the WNEPSLA Division II champion and earned the right to face St. Luke’s, a Division III team that had beaten the Cavaliers 11-4 earlier this season and earned home field advantage in Friday’s Div II/Div III New England semi-final game.
Harvey, 16-1 when invited to the New England tournament for the first time in ten years, played St. Luke’s tough in their rematch. Ricky Schulman gave Harvey the lead in the first minute of play, and All-American Brandon Hickey made it 2-0 with a minute remaining in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Mack Dowling put a pair past Harvey keeper James Underwood to make it 2-0 at the half.
The Cavaliers scored two goals in the first quarter while shutting out St. Luke’s offense. It was a different story in the second period as St. Luke’s scored two and kept Harvey out of the net. Both teams traded goals in the third period. In the second minute, John Bolanos got a shot past St. Luke’s keeper Adam Connolly with an assist by Tim Ehlberg, to put Harvey in the lead, but Greg Sellhausen tied it for the hosts four minutes later.
The score remained 3-3 until Tyler Brennan beat Harvey keeper James Underwood with four minutes remaining, and Dowling made it 5-3 a minute later with his third. However, Harvey battled back with a shot from Schulman with 22 seconds left in the game to make it 5-4.
Then, with just three seconds left, Mitch Bowman fired one at the St. Luke’s net, but Connolly got a piece of it and sprawled to sit on the ball as the final buzzer sounded.
The goalies, Underwood for Harvey and Connolly for St. Luke’s, each had nine saves.
St. Luke’s now advances to the New England Championship Game today against Dexter School of Brookline, Mass. at Worcester Academy in Worcester, Mass.
Softball
Fox Lane
No. 4 Fox Lane's Allison Lombardi hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to score the eventual game-winning run in the Foxes' 6-5 triumph against visiting North Rockland on May 25 in a Section 1 Class AA first-round contest according to Debbie Schechter's post on the LoHud Softball Blog.
Lombardi went 2 for 4 with four RBI. Christie Lombardi went 2 for 3 with a double and one RBI.

John Jay
Schechter also reported that No. 16 John Jay on the same day lost at No. 1 Pearl River 13-0 in its Class A opening-round contest.
Baseball
Fox Lane
No. 4 Fox Lane's TJ Hallock picked up the win (6 IP, 6 H, 2 BB, 3 HBP, 6 R, 4 ER, 7 K, 116 pitches, 67 strikes) in the Foxes' 7-6 triumph against visiting No. 5 New Rochelle in the quarterfinals of the Section 1 Class AA Tournament on May 26 as per Vincent Mercogliano's post on the LoHud Baseball Blog.
Mercogliano also reported on this separate post that the Foxes won their first-round contest 9-7 against Clarkstown North on May 25.
John Jay
Mercogliano had it all locally, as he stated in this post that John Jay's Jimmy O’Reilly and Brian Gleason both had a double and four RBI for the No. 16 Indians in their 17-3 win at No. 1 Yonkers on May 25 in a Class A first-round game.
In its quarterfinal contest, John Jay fell to Byram Hills 10-6, as per Mercogliano here.
