Bellmore-Merrick Installs Field Of Honor

The field of flags honors those that served the country, and was also a fundraiser for Building Homes for Heroes.

About 300 American and military branch flags are currently displayed on the Wellington C. Mepham High School lawn after students volunteered to assist at the Oct. 28 installation.

In an fundraiser effort led by social studies teachers Chris Patten and Kerry Dennis, students in the senior service learning project sold flags to benefit the organization, Building Homes for Heroes.

“This organization builds mortgage-free homes that meet the needs of the men and women who have selflessly served our country,” explained Dennis.

Students, faculty and others gathered on the lawn Sunday morning to organize, assembly and install the field of honor. “Our students care and they want to be here and they want to make a difference,” said Patten.

The arrangement of flags will be displayed through Dec. 10.

“It gives us a sense of pride to see the set up because our school is doing something to give back to the veterans,” added senior Nikkia Theodule.
