Census Data Shows More Diversity in the Bellmores

Overall population increases in Bellmore, but decreases slightly in North Bellmore.

The population of Bellmore has grown somewhat significantly since 2000, according to data released by the United States Census Bureau on Tuesday. The total population was 16,441 in 2000, and currently sits at 17,470.

In terms of diversity, Bellmore has seen a growth in the number of African American, Hispanic/Latino and Asian residents.

Bellmore's African American population showed the biggest increase in size by percentage. The population was a mere 77 in 2000 and has currently risen to 137, which is an increase of almost 78 percent.

The largest non-White group in total size was the Hispanic/Latino population. In 2000, the Hispanic/Latino population was 515. It has risen to 886 in 2010, which is an increase of more than 72 percent.

Bellmore's Asian population also showed a significant increase in both size and percentage. The Asian resident total was 330 in 2000 and is currently up to 583, an increase of 76 percent.

The number of White residents declined slightly from 15,784 in 2000 to 15,637 in 2010 -- a decrease of less than one percent.

North Bellmore

While the population of Bellmore appears to be on the rise, the population of North Bellmore decreased by more than 350 residents from 2000 to 2010. The population is currently 19,721.

The diversity patterns and demographical numbers for North Bellmore were significantly different from those of Bellmore.

The number of African American residents increased from 430 in 2000 to 525 in 2010. While the African American 525 residents is certainly more than the 137 residents in Bellmore, the increase of almost 23 percent in North Bellmore is drastically less than the 77 percent growth in Bellmore.

Also, unlike Bellmore, the Hispanic/Latino population in North Bellmore is on the decline. In 2000, the population was 913, compared with 794 in 2010 -- a decrease of more than 13 percent.

The largest growth in size, as well as percentage, in North Bellmore came from the Asian population, which stood at 633 in 2000. The population soared to 1,323 in 2010, a growth of more than 109 percent.

The White population, which totaled at 18,530 in 2000, had the most significant decrease in total size of any demographic in the Bellmores. In 2010 the White population dipped to 16,885, a decrease of almost nine percent.
