A Dozen Sickly Cats Rescued From Nassau Home: DA

Once the cats are medically cleared they will be available for adoption, the Nassau County DA's office says.

NORTH BELLMORE, NY — At least a dozen cats are being removed from a home in North Bellmore after complaints came to the Town of Hempstead Supervisor's office.

The Nassau County District Attorney's office says no charges are expected.

Multiple agencies executed a warrant and animal recovery operation at 2475 Washington Ave. in North Bellmore.

Nicole Turso, a spokesperson for the Nassau County District Attorney, said they began seizing the cats on Monday and it will continue throughout the week.

Animals that were rescued thus far are suffering from respiratory infections, eye infections and other ailments. Additionally, ammonia levels in the home were toxic.

The animals have been surrendered by the owner and will be processed for adoption once they are medically cleared, Turso said.

The property owner has been removed and is in the care of relatives. Adult Protective Services was on the scene to assist. The home has been padlocked and the house condemned, Turso said.

SPCA is accepting donations to help with the animals' care and getting them adopted at nassaucountyspca.org.
