Hempstead Town Opens Senior Centers to Residents Still Without Power

The centers will remain open to all town residents from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

After a major weekend storm downed hundreds of trees and caused massive power outages, Hempstead Town has opened its senior centers to residents who remain without electricity. Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray is inviting the thousands of residents still without power to visit the town's senior centers for a reprieve.

Residents still dealing with a lack of light, heat or hot water can relax in one of the comfortable buildings, utilizing the opportunity to get warm, have coffee, read a book, or socialize with others while their homes remain without electricity.

Hempstead Town operates 16 senior centers in communities including Merrick, Wantagh, Baldwin, Franklin Square and Oceanside. The centers will remain open to all town residents from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Hempstead Town appears to have been the hardest hit area on Long Island during the storm, accounting for more power outages than all other island townships combined. Town highway workers in coordination with LIPA have removed hundreds of felled trees from roadways and property.
