Mepham Pays Tribute to Homecoming with Spirit Week

This week Mepham students showed just how much fun school can be by embracing Spirit Week. Each day last week was devoted to a special theme, aimed to amp up excitement as the school segued into the weekend's homecoming festivities.

On Monday, students started off the week by attending classes in their favorite loungewear and pajamas. Many students considered Pajama Day an appropriate choice in theme, because the first day after a weekend is generally a lazy day when it comes wardrobe choices. From freshman to seniors, a large majority of students donned Mepham plaid sweatpants and a T-shirt from the club or sport of their choice. Some however, took pajama day to a new level, bringing along pillows and teddy-bears as props and wearing coordinating sets, bright patterns and even feetie-pajamas.

Tuesday's festivities turned more upscale as seniors wore their finest options for Formal Day. For nearly a week prior, this day was the topic of conversation among girls, with lunchtime discussions debating the pros and cons of wearing heels. All of the talk was for good reason, because on Tuesday the senior students attended class in style. Girls wore short party dresses. The brave ones climbed the stairs in heels, while others opted for flats or flip-flops. Even guys got in on the action, many dressing up in dress slacks, shirts and ties. Some created elaborate ensembles complete with suit jackets and top hats.

For underclassmen students, formal day was juxtaposed with Mismatch Day. Creative students took to their closets to assemble interesting outfits. Junior Lindsay Hanes had one of the best of the day, using neon colors and animal prints. Even her hair was mismatching, as one pigtail was braided and the other straightened.

Mepham students transformed from uniquely different on Tuesday to remarkably similar on Wednesday while celebrating Twin Day. Groups of friends went all-out to create outfits that were not only memorable, but often meaningful as well. Senior Kelsey Nicklaus helped to coordinate an outfit for a group of her friends, with a custom t-shirt that featured a heartfelt slogan about friendship and colored legwarmers. Other seniors wore a shirt that made a play on lyrics from the Drake song, "You Fancy."

On Thursday, Mepham started to transfer its spirit towards athletics with Jersey/Sports Day. Students showed their support for a variety of teams, ranging from Mepham's athletics to their favorite professional teams.

For Friday, students focused on representing their pride in Mepham by arriving in only the school's colors. The school ran a battle of the classes for Pep Rally, with each grade assigned to decorate a hallway and to wear a specific color. The class with the best hallway and most members wearing its designated color will receive free chocolate chip cookies. Freshmen were assigned white, sophomores gray, juniors garnet and seniors black. Though each grade had a sizable population adorned with its colors, seniors vied for the top prize by pre-ordering shirts with the phrase "Mepham Class of 2011: So Good We're Number 1 Twice."

Although Pep Rally was postponed due to inclement weather, Mepham's students did a wonderful job of fostering a sense of spirit and community in time for the Homecoming Parade.
