Mepham Student Wins Miss Long Island Teen 2012

Mepham student Sabrina Mastrangelo was crowned Miss Long Island Teen 2012 at a beauty pageant held Sunday at the Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts.

More than 370 young women across Long Island applied for a spot in this year's Miss Long Island and Miss Long Island Teen pageant, with 19 finalists competed for the crown.

The pageant's finalists competed on Sunday through an extensive interview process throughout the day with the judges before the pageant held that evening.

During the pageant, friends and family cheered as the young women modeled in swimsuits and evening gowns. After the top five finalists for each division were announced, the final round consisted of a question asked to each contestant.

Mastrangelo will be a sophomore this fall at Mepham. This was the second pageant that she has competed in.

"I competed in another pageant last November and I really fell in love with them. I just like the whole idea of pageantry and the different systems that you can compete in, so I wanted to do another one," Mastrangelo said.

Mastrangelo plans to campaign for her platform -- raising awareness on cyberbullying -- throughout her year as Miss Long Island Teen.

"What I really want to do is get into schools, start talking to children and make presentations on how to be aware when cyberbullying is taking place," she said. "... The Internet is where we deal with all of our business almost every day, and we need to make it a safe place."

After winning Mastrangelo said she was simply amazed, and borderline speechless. She advised other young women to be confident in themselves.

"Going into pageantry, I just think that you have to just try to be yourself," Mastrangelo said. "I really don’t do much to prepare, except, I guess, think about a couple of answers that the judges might ask [me], and then practice the walk a little bit. So I think it’s just better to be yourself than to actually over practice."

This year's pageant was judged by Mark Lerner, Toni Stanton, Kimberly Thomas, Gail King and Leer Leary with tabulation by Joseph Mortimer.
