BELLMORE, NY —Three Dog Bakery, a shop that specializes in treats for canine pets, is holding a fundraiser this weekend at its Bellmore location.

They will have a rescue group visiting on Saturday afternoon with a handful of puppies up for adoption.

Co-owner Gloria Ma is working with Schmitt's Animal Rescue and Haven in Long Island.

"They mainly rescue puppies from Puerto Rico who need homes," Ma told Patch.

The couple, who run the rescue service, foster the puppies until forever homes can be found.

"Any families, who are interested in adopting can fill out an application. If they are the right family, they can adopt on the spot," she said.

Although her shop isn't charging any fees, some rescue groups will include a small price for adopting.

Those who adopt will receive a "paw-certificate" with the puppy's name, adoption date and a paw print. All puppies are up-to-date on their shots, she added.

Ma is raising money for Schmitt's through $5 raffle tickets. The winner receives a Three Dog Bakery gift basket as part of the Saturday event.

Since Ma and her husband John just opened the Bedford Avenue store last month, this is their first opportunity to give back to the neighborhood.

"We love working with the local community," she said. "We're excited; hopefully we'll get a good turnout."

Ma already has another adoption event lined up for March, in conjunction with the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter.

"Stray puppies looking to find a home always have a special place in my heart," Ma said.
