Police: Officer Hurt While Arresting Wantagh Man For Assaulting Girlfriend

The girlfriend, who is also from Wantagh, was arrested as well after interfering with officers, police say.

An MTA officer suffered a fractured finger while assisting in arresting a Wantagh man who assaulted his girlfriend Wednesday evening, police said.

The couple–Christopher Wegner, 28, and Angelica Velotti, 24, also of Wantagh–both faces charges, according to Nassau Police.

According to police, Wegner and Velotti got into a verbal argument that escalated to a physical altercation at Fir Street and Merrick Road in Wantagh around 6:30 p.m.

Police said Wegner threw his motorcycle helmet at Velotti, striking her in the head, causing an injury and dizziness.

As officers attempted to place Wegner into custody, he began fighting and resisting arrest, police said.

Velotti began physically interfering and was told numerous times to stand back but ignored the orders, police said.

As officers placed Wegner in custody, the MTA officer sustained a fractured finger on his left hand, police said.

A Nassau County ambulance technician observed Velotti remove a black handle gravity knife from her boot and throw it to the ground, police said.

Wegner is charged with two counts of second degree assault, criminal possession of a weapon and resisting arrest. Velotti is charged with criminal possession of a weapon and obstructing governmental administration. Both were due to be arraigned on Thursday in First District Court in Hempstead.
