Pothole Problems in Bellmore

Winter months cause problems on roads around the Bellmores.

The snowstorms that wreaked havoc across Long Island this winter are still causing problems on the roadways.

The constant freezing temperatures, along with the tremendous amounts of snow and ice, have left numerous potholes on the streets around the Bellmores. Potholes are sometimes unavoidable on the road and can cause serious damage to cars if they are driven over.

When water and snow find their way into small cracks in the road during the winter, they freeze and expand. Once the warmer weather begins and they melt, the result is the potholes that have been seen around town.

According to the Highway Department, there is no timetable as to when the potholes will be completely repaired. It is strictly "weather permitting."

The long lasting snow that fell throughout December and January has made things tough for the Highway Department to get out and temporarily repair the potholes, but they have started in certain areas around Bellmore, like at the intersection of Martin Avenue and Bellmore Avenue (see pictures).

Potholes should be reported directly to the Highway Department at (516) 489-5000 or e-mailed to pothole@tohmail.org. Residents should provide the exact street address and the nearest cross street.
